LISTENER QUESTIONS ABOUT NAMING ANSWERED!
Good news and Bad. BAD: We often have so many listeners email or call with questions that we can’t possibly get to all of them on-the-air. GOOD: The PR 101 Radio Blog is the perfect forum for continued discussion of great topics!
The dynamic duo of Alexandra Watkins and Sherry Petersik, the creative force behind nationally acclaimed naming company, Eat My Words, were back on the show by popular demand today. Here are there responses to one question we didn’t have time to address on the airwaves:
QUESTION FROM LALA & RAYA OF WEDDINGISH: “Well, we think that ‘Weddingish’ is cute, clever and catchy, but sometimes we have issues with people not being able to pronounce and spell it. What do you think of this? Thanks.”
THE ‘EAT MY WORDS’ VERDICT: Sherry, who recently got married (see her gorgeous picture over there…) helped Alexandra tackle this one….
You have two major strikes against you: Your name (Weddingish) is hard to pronounce and hard to spell. We’re also confused as to what Weddingish means or what your business does. “Ish” isn’t a definitive term and nothing comes to mind when we hear it. We’d usually strongly suggest you change the name! if you DID change your name, new customers will never know you by your old - er, maiden name, and a new version might be more impactful.
But by looking at the press that you have on your website, you clearly have a lot of equity in your current name. Luckily, because wedding planning is such a once in a lifetime thing, you have constant client turnover and lots of word-of-mouth referrals.
A good example of a great wedding-related name is The Knot, which is visually evocative and meaningful to people about to take the plunge. It’s short, sweet easy to pronounce and spell.
Best of luck to you,
Alexandra & Sherry

ERIKA’S TWO CENTS: If you do keep your name - prior customers know exactly what you do and will reinforce the brand when they recommend you. Thanks Alexandra & Sherry! Another great name for a wedding related company is The Big Day, another client that my PR firm Three Girls Media & Marketing Inc. has helped Spread the Good News for!
